"The use of the word 'annoy' is particularly problematic," says Marv
Johnson, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union.
"What's annoying to one person may not be annoying to someone else."
Here's an opportunity for some of you to appreciate the work of the
ACLU. I know it is difficult for some of you, for some reason, but here
is a nice example. They defend freedom of speech.
Or gee Mike, any other group out there protecting civil liberties. I'm
sure the Jay of the ACLJ will have something to say about it and will be
at the very least being filing amicus curiae if not bringing suit
themselves.
The ACLU does not have a monopoly on civil rights. Far from it, and
thank God that is so. How distasteful would it be to have to climb onto
the cart with the ACLU, when only one of the destinations you'd be
visiting would be one you'd agree with, support, and indeed not despise.
If President Bush truly believed in the principle of limited government
(it is in his official bio), he'd realize that the law he signed cannot
be squared with the Constitution he swore to uphold.
We should consider the possibility that Bush doesn't care about the
Constitution and he would in fact like to undo it and place more power
in his own hands.
Do you and others like you really believe these things when you say
them? Do you have real proof, or are these just drive by ad hominem
attacks on a man you don't really know.
Bush has the chance to show his respect for what he calls Americans'
personal freedoms. Now we'll see if the president rises to the occasion.
Maybe the opportunity is to advance government control over citizens and
to advance the welfare of wealthy people who can afford attorneys over
the rights of those of us who cannot afford them. You can guess what I
think Bush will do.
Or maybe it was allowed to slide for the greater good to get a bill that
HAD to be passed even though it had rubbish slipped in by some
legislators who chose to abuse the system in the hopes that once the
budget was passed, further legislation would be undertaken to nullify
their nonsense.
Personally I'm amazed that in this day and age, with so many advisers at
their beck and call, that our legislators can come up with such dumb
legislation that reasonably intelligent adolescent could see the dangers
and pitfalls of. Oh gee.. I have an idea. Lets put a 1 cent tax on all
emails... We can't? Why?
