I don't know a lot about it, so I hope Stephen will chime in. I do hear that large primes can be used in cryptography, but I don't know if "the largest known prime" is really useful for that.


It is often said that number theory is an area of pure math with few applications, but I'll want to hear Stephen's views on that.
