Uh..yeah.  OK, so I've just spent way too much time grading
not-so-great undergraduate writing, and I'm running low on battery
power, but the methodology used here is truly weird.  It probably
works for relative positions on the spectrum but I think the
center-point is likely to be off.  So one of the more remarkable
things about politics today is how surprisingly more conservative
elected politicians are than the people they represent (on most
issues).  Bush ran into this with his proposed Social Security
reforms, for example.

My guess is that the true center would be the Wall Street Journal news
pages, but I'll tell you why later. :-)  (Eek 9%!)
