As I said about the previous topic I'm not good at finding these things,
but my wife came through for me once again. Here are possible sources
for the ~85% figure:
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/beliefnet_poll_010718.html
U.S. Religious Affiliation, 2002 ( http://people-press.org/ )
(self-identification, Pew Research Council)
In February and March 2002 the Pew Research Council conducted a survey
of 2,002 adults. Questions about religious preference were included. The
results are below:
Religious Preference % June 1996 % March 2001 March 2002
Christian 84 82 82
Jewish 1 1 1
Muslim * 1 *
Other non-Christian 3 2 1
Atheist * 1 1
Agnostic * 2 2
Something else (SPECIFY) * 1 2
No preference 11 8 10
Don't know/Refused 1 2 1
TOTAL 100 100 100
She also quoted another poll that surmised that "religion of a country
is inversely related to wealth, except for with the US". An interesting
observation, though who's to say if correlation relates to causation,
much like the FSM pirate example. She didn't give me the link :(
Regarding your replies below.
No one is saying that you should change your beliefs. I never said that.
I said that your post was dishonest and likely only for purposes of
expression of contempt.
I think your reply has validated my claims.
I think also that my claim that you are capable, and more prone to make
a well reasoned argument rather than a drive-by character assassination
is true.
I can respect you even if I don't agree with you. I didn't feel your
post was in keeping with that regard.

You know Mike, I've come to expect more of you. A lot of your
arguments are well reasoned and make me think.
This post I think however is beneath you both with consideration of
intellect and of reasoning and rhetoric.
You already know that there is a percentage of the population, we'll
not say what percentage, except to say that it is significant enough
to be discussed, that believes by Faith that The Holy Bible and its
"myths" and stories and parables and historical accounts to be to one
degree or another absolutely true.
You know this.
You know that people take it seriously.
Yes, and it concerns me. It's absolute inane madness to believe "on
faith" that what is written in some book is all true. This faith-based
belief shows an utter contempt for reason and it is probably the
greatest problem currently facing humanity. There are millions upon
millions of people who have a different "faith" than yours and there is
no way to resolve conflicts with those people because none of you can
admit to the possibility that you are mistaken.
Why should I feel any higher regard for your "faith" than I feel for the
psychotic delusion of one mental patient or the idiotic "Flying
Spaghetti Monster?" One of the reasons you people have been able to
carry on with this madness for centuries now is that you have
successfully harmed or intimidated people into shutting up. Enough is
enough.
