I may be wrong, but isn't a religious organization (say, a church)
incorporated under the same not-for-profit 501c.3 statute?
Other than the Mormon Church, I don't know of many churches that do
actually make any sort of profit, and even there it's not taken out in
the form of dividends and high salaries (for the most part). They use a
good deal of it to fund world wide ministries and "good works" and aid
to the less fortunate (if you can put up with home teachers *grin*), so
even they probably don't fall in the 'for-profit' window.
Really, read the cult of the dead cow link, and take into mind that it
was written at least 5 if not more years ago, and that the church has
seen growth and such... Billions... It's a fun read.
There are some TV ministries out there the certainly violate this, but
if they are tax exempt, that exemption usually is nullified when the
head nut is put into prison, and yet another blow to Christianity, as
people accept the cop-out of saying Christians are hypocrites, and not
flawed people who for the most part are trying to live by a higher
standard, but are just as messed up as the rest of us in some cases.

I should study up on that and how it works. It might be a bad idea.
On the other hand, we give tax breaks to non-profits. Are those
different breaks?
I believe it to be the same thing, but IANAA (I am not an accountant =)
This might help you:
