I've heard it was political pressure that killed the street car. Maybe
there's some residual affecting the rail system. With rail systems you
still have to get right of way, and maybe no one wants to let it run
through their back yard.

Metrolink is still better than nothing and for many things works quite
well.  

Pity it's not all over the metro area, though.  They had that with
streetcars and lost it.   I've always wondered why commuter rail can't
be done.
