Rub it in, Mike.  This is probably Columbia's single worst feature.

The problem is the "cram what you need" step.  I've got a poster
rolled up in a tube to take, and I'm gone 6 days which limits how
lightI can pack.

The real problem here is that I think my drive time from Columbia to
STL could be pretty much anything from 90 minutes to 4 hours...

You must be fun to stand next to on day 4 of your trips. :-) 
Seriously, last time I had a poster tube, that and my computer were my
only allowed carry-ons, and they made me check the other bag at check
in.
