It just gets worse and worse. I can only hope that the federal efforts

It has been somewhat slow, but more obviously, completely disorganized.
By sometime Saturday it was obvious that a major cat 4 or cat 5
hurricane would strike the gulf coast. *That's* when you start the
hospital boat from Baltimore and re-base some advance stuff including
Guard call-ups. Yes, there's a chance you will over-react but the risk
of a complete catastrophe is very large.
Exactly -- what's the deal with that? In addition, we have known to
expect major hurricanes every year and should have planned years in
advance for this possibility.
Another important issue here is that we really don't have very good
evacuation plans in place for most vulnerable coastal areas. A plan
that could have gotten another 20,000 people out of the city before the
hurricane hit would have made things much easier. As it was, only the
people with cars had a decent shot to get out.
Yet another good point.
We also have to remember that in addition to the refugees, there are many
people staying with relatives or friends. Those people also have nowhere
to go and their friends/relatives won't want to put them up forever.
Many people have lost jobs. Tulane and LSU Med School must be shut down
for at least a while. It's going to take a while to get things working
again.
I'm sure glad I live in one of the least disaster-prone places in the
country!
Mike
