Just reading that your son is playing a game that 'pushes' his system, I would guess you are playing a FPS. FPS's are just about all I play, and I can tell you that you want to play on just about the largest resolution you can and at the highest refresh rate (hz) you can.

He's playng some Star Wars games which are FPS games, at least some of the time (sometimes it's light sabers instead of guns!). We were running the monitor at 1280 x 1024 and 85 Hz, which is a nice resolution, but that made the game a bit slow/sticky. We found that playing at 800 x 600 gave us the best responsiveness and the picture still looked good.

If you aren't comfortable (or computer can't do it) play with the resolution that you like the most. There are many tutorials on how to tweak each individual game out there.

Thanks -- that's a great idea. I hadn't tried to look for that kind of info on the web.
