Second, most women (72 percent) recalled their childhood sexual episodes negatively, but most men recalled them positively (37 percent) or neutrally (29 percent).

Third, only a minority of men and women reported lasting negative effects, although temporary negative effects were reported by a majority of women.

Mike, how can you possibly construe this to mean that adult-child sex is harmless or "mostly harmless"?

If 28% of women didn't even recall their childhood sexual episodes "negatively" then just how bad do you think the other 72% are? I'm sure that if you ask people about stubbing their toes, 100% will recall it negatively, but we think of toe stubbing as relatively harmless. Then we have 66% of men recalling childhood sexual experiences positively or neutrally. There might even be more help than harm in those experiences.

The problem is that there are sexual sadists out there who will kidnap and murder children. This makes headlines. Other cases are often unreported. So the public view of adult-child sex is that it is horrible beyond belief, but the reality is that many cases are not even harmful. Of course it is a mixed bag and some of the girls in the 72% were raped, or gang raped, or incest victims, etc. Many cases are not coerced and the effect usually is less damaging.

We'd need to look into the matter for boys in more detail. How many of the ones who positively recalled their experiences were gay?

How many were 17 years old and having sex with a 25-year-old neighborhood housewife? That may be considered adult-child sex.

if someone changed their sexual orientation as a result of adult-child sex, is that something you can consider harmless?

We would never know. If a teen, say, has sex with an adult man, that may be because the teen was gay already, or considering it. If the teen was a willing 17-year-old and the "adult" man was 22, how much of a crime would that be? It shouldn't be much of a crime, if you ask me, but the 22-year-old would probably face jail time in many states.

For boys having sex with adult women I have anecdotal evidence from a sexuologist that they may have a difficulty forming relationships with women later down the road because of how strongly the sexual experiences get imprinted. Because our culture considers "scoring" as one of the best things that can happen to a man, these boys could still report their experiences as pleasurable and only appear "slightly less adjusted" on average.

I'm not familiar with that research. I'm not sure I understand the idea - are you saying that men remain attached to the first woman they have sex with? That seems unlikely to me, but if there is a study, I'll look at it.
