I agree with you that Bush could do more to curb the use of Petroleum
products. I have no argument there. Not because of Greenhouse gases
mind you, but just for the practicality of it. I think there are a
number of things he could do to without requiring congress to pass
laws over the deal.
It might seem like a small issue, but the first thing I would do is
require all government vehicles that are used for less than 125 miles
per day to be electric based. This would include all Mail carrying
vehicles. I would also put in some tax breaks for people who buy
electric cars. I would give companies tax breaks if they put electric
vehicle charging stations for their employees to use.
Based on US census numbers, the average daily commute is 24 minutes.
Well within the range of today's modern electric vehicles. If the
government was to subsidize people to drive electric vehicles for
their daily commute, perhaps in an instant monetary kick back, we
could get a lot of people out of their gas guzzlers and into electric
vehicles.
I would agree with people who say electric vehicles just plain look
ugly, but there is a company across the street from my office that can
turn almost any vehicle into an electric vehicle. The cost of the
conversion is about $10,000 though so it is not cheap. They have a
very nice looking Model A kit car over there that is electric and has
a range of 275 miles. About the same range as my truck gets on a tank
of gas.
Just my opinion of course.
