I've been looking but most of the dogs in the animal shelters are
usually older dogs. We have heard (maybe incorrectly) that it would be
easier to house/cage train a pup. The puppy will have to be in its
cage 6-8 hours a day and we don't think an older dog who isn't used to
that would be very happy.
That is not my experience. Since my dad used to run the shelter in Jeff
City, every animal I've had since I was 10 has come from the shelter and
they've been, without exception, great animals. The only thing you have
to be careful of is that alot of animals that end up in the shelter were
abused, and different breeds deal with that differently. I would not
suggest getting a rott or pit bull from the shelter (if they don't put
them down by default) but, I've had a collie and a chow that were both
great dogs even though they'd obviously been abused.
Personally, I think the dogs appreciate a good home better after coming
from a bad one, but that may be me anthropomorphizing too much =)
