Actually, you can house train a puppy by using a laundry room or some
other room where accidents are not that much of a worry. Simply put
down paper and have it cover the whole room. After a while, you take
some of the paper away, and then more and more, eventually, 8 -12
weeks, you can typically put the paper outside.
Puppies are easier to train than older dogs, but I would warn about
the plan of having them in a cage? Anyway if it is a nice large "pen"
then that might be one thing but a cage for 6 - 8 hours will typically
not work too well.
Also, to train a puppy takes time, think of it like you have a child,
a child's education is never ending, the same is with a puppy. While a
puppy is easier to, train, they also form a lot of their behaviors at
this age as well. 6 - 8 hours a day is like a liftetime to a puppy.
Maybe it would be better for you to look at a 6 month to a 12 month
young dog. They are typically able to stay home longer periods of
time, they still have the desire to learn at this point and they are
likely not to have too many bad habits you have to spend time
breaking.
