I've been looking but most of the dogs in the animal shelters are
usually older dogs. We have heard (maybe incorrectly) that it would be
easier to house/cage train a pup. The puppy will have to be in its

that would be very happy.
A puppy will be easier to train. Older dogs can be trained as well. It takes more patience and time.
Puppies are usually available in most shelters.
Sometimes you'll get lucky at the shelter and find an older dog that is already trained.
If you have a mud or laundry room or even a basement that can be closed
off, you may be able to confine the dog to an area instead of putting
them in a crate. That usually works with older dogs (not while
you are housebreaking a puppy).
