[MLUG - DISCUSSION] External USB 2.0 Drive kernel panic

Hey MLUG-

I got a bran new external 5 Gig Seagate micro-drive 
http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/pocket/

I am on a Dell X300 (which supports USB HD boot) and am attempting to 
get Gentoo to boot from the external HD...  Problem is that I keep 
getting a kernel panic just after the USB drivers initialize with a 
Kernel panic - Cannot mount root on /dev/sda3...

anyone else have any luck with USB 2.0 devices booting on their own?  
(no floppies etc...)

Thought I would ask before I started to post .config and grub.conf
