They're occasionally convenient, and it's a must for work for me. Our
personal cell phone spends so much time depowered that we're thinking
about canceling it. We did use it for long distance, but then I got
Vonage for my work line. After work hours long distance costs nobody
nuthin' extra.
Cell phones are good when driving somewhere where help might be few and
far between, or calling ahead for hotel reservations.

I only carry my cell phone (which also acts as my pager) when I'm not
oncall if it's during working hours or I might need to be reached or
reach somone (like for the afore mentioned shopping list).

It does. That's why I like having an old house. Doesn't get much more
analog than me and bucket of paint, or a sawzall, or a drill, or
anything like that.
It also helps having kids. I can't pay attention to anything but the
tyke when I'm watching him. You also have to be mindful to stay out of
the splash zone:
