Not any more. I'd like to think I give accounts only to the better
sort of people, but that may not be completely true... Apparently the
ability to give away 50 accounts is a bit more exclusive, but not much
more...

Yup; under Mac OS X, all major browsers work. Firefox should work
everywhere (except Win98, according to Mike). Gmail does browser
sniff, so it might think you'll have problems if you're using
something really obscure, but it will let you go ahead and try. You
do need to accept cookies (from Google), and you need to let
javascript run (at least from Google).
The first "killer app" for gmail as far as I can see is handling very
large attachments. Neuroscience papers with full color figures can
get really huge, so if you ask for a reprint or are mailing one to a
colleague (or are getting one to review) having an account with
essentially zero disk space limitation is quite nice. I've also had
students mail work to me at my gmail account, which is again fairly
pleasant.
The second "killer app" is the "search don't sort" philosophy. It has
outstanding search capabilities, especially for a webmail client.

So I saw you got one, apparently while I was writing up notes on DNA
polymerase or something. It's fun at least to play with at the very
least.
