So it hasn't changed the grade distribution at all so far, but the
music to grade by for the semester is...
Brian Wilson's SMiLE
My take is that this wasn't worth 38 years of angst and craziness, but
it is by and large pretty impressive stuff. Especially worthy of note
is the second section (beginning around "Wonderful" through "Surf's
Up" which includes "Song for Children/Child is the father of the man"
which really would have changed the history of popular music if it had
been released in 1966 as originally intended. Now, that would have
been incredible: the other Beach Boys album that came out (over
studio objections) was Pet Sounds. As it happens, the only cut off of
this that really ever did come out as intended was "Good Vibrations",
which was an inspired effort then and now.
