Gentoo from a stage one install can be as small as you want it (take a
look at the Gentoo on a stick project 128MB flash drives)... Check your
use flags and get rid of the "not needed stuff" and think about a
different window manager... e.g. xfce it is fast small and reliable and
doesn't have the bloat that KDE or dare I say it Gnome has...
