Hmm. Stripped down in what way? As best as I can tell, it's FreeBSD
with bells and whistles attached and (I'll admit) different ideas
about how applications should be packaged and how user password data
is handled.

Well, I think XP is fairly lame, but to be honest, I'm pretty gung-ho
about the Mac now because I can completely ignore the GUI interface
and do almost everything from the keyboard if I want.
Obviously tastes differ, and the Mac OS X interface ain't perfect, but
I'll take the PDF-based display with full screen windows and Expose
any day of the week.
Meanwhile:

So turn it off. Go to "Dock" under system preferences and uncheck
"animate opening applications". Meanwhile, I also highly recommend
"Automatically hide and show dock" (especially on a notebook screen).
Then you don't even see the sucker 99% of the time, which I'm guessing
you'd be very happy with...
