I should modify that claim. There are 5,000 "discussions" which can
include several e-mail messages per discussion. This is another somewhat
bothersome feature of gmail - it's hard to delete individual messages
because they are organized into groups called "discussions". If you
search and delete, you'll be doing that to entire discussions, not just to
individual messages.
I don't use gmail as my regular mailer. I use pine on Solaris. Sendmail
uses my .forward on Solaris to send a copy of every incoming message to
gmail. In pine, I use auto Bcc to send a copy of every outgoing message
to gmail. Thus, when I delete a message on gmail, I am only deleting my
secondary copy and I still have the original on my Solaris box. I want to
move all of my work from Solaris to Linux pretty soon - I'm working on
that now.
