I learned to control this when I had nightmares as a child. It works
well, but it does have side effects.

A couple of years ago, I was dreaming that I was about to get into a
fist fight. I kept thinking, "I'm not going to get caught off guard,
I'm going to throw the first punch." Right as I throw the first punch,
I wake up. My mind is no longer disconnected from my body and I slug my
sleeping wife in the shoulder. Luckily, she has an excellent sense of
humor and started laughing when I explained it to her.

Dream safe!
