I watched the film "Gandhi" a few weeks ago and was very impressed. I had
seen it in the theater 20 years ago when it first came out. It's really a
great film that affected me a lot. It made me think. Here's what I
think: Gandhi's strategy worked for him because he was able to get the
attention of the world and turn the world against his enemy. Without
sufficient media attention, he'd have been a goner. So the strategy
really isn't pacifism as much as it is media manipulation (via pacifism),
and it requires that the enemy can be shamed into desisting. If the
entire world had decided to use pacifism against Hitler, we'd all be Nazis
today.
