I agree with Jon's assessment. It was a winner for Kerry because he
appeared strong and competent. He did not seem weak and he did not seem
unclear in his direction or plans.
Bush did fumble a bit, but I don't think it was killing him. I think he
didn't get an advantage on Kerry because he didn't do anything to
distinguish himself. He was just the Bush we are used to, maybe even a
little less than that.
Issues? I think Kerry did better, but that's just me. Frankly, I don't
think the real issues matter that much (to the effect of the debate on the
election outcome) because most people who could be swayed by the debate
don't understand the issues very well. It's about style. Kerry won.
