Our old 900 MHz cordless phone/answering machine is fading into the
sunset. I'd be happy to buy another like it, but now I find that 900
MHz phones are like just *so* 1990s, so you can't really get a decent
one.

The problem is that 2.4GHz phones are known to have issues with
wireless networks, and there's no way we're going to let *that* happen
to us. So that leaves you with 5.8 GHz cordless phones. That would
seem to be no problem, but reading reviews of a few of them suggest
that some of them might also use 2.4 GHz band as well (bleah!), while
others just aren't that good, since the category is new. Whee.

So does anybody know of any systematic problems with 5.8 GHz phones
and/or recommendations for a phone/answering machine combo. I've
combed over Amazon, and found a couple in our cheapskate sub-$100
range, but we might as well get this right the first time.
