I have a friend who almost fell prey to this scam. He listed a Corvette
for sale on the web, and had a guy from up north somewhere contact him
to buy it. The guy sent him the fake cashier's check, and my friend had
a funny feeling about it so he went to the bank to check it out. They
called the originating bank to check on the funds, and it turns out the
check was originally made out for $2.00 instead of $20,000 and the guy
edited it to the (much) higher amount. My friend took the check to the
Postmaster General and they said it's getting to be a pretty common
scam. Hopefully they caught the guy, but who knows...
