- Thread-topic: [MLUG - DISCUSSION] Go Wal-Mart Go
Because of your brand new basketball arena we are getting a new 11
million dollar building along with about every other college and
university in Missouri (except Lincoln who isn't getting their pool).
If the arena wouldn't have been funded the life sciences building would
have gone through. Since MU got an Arena and a new life since building
the state government diced that every college deserves a new building.
Thank You Bill Laurie for starting an "arms" race between the state
colleges!
Jerry

Others have pointed out that the $25 million came from the Laurie
family, who are not Wal*Mart per se. And still others have pointed
out the *real* problem with the name, which is that they didn't name
it after their daughter, but dad's sports venture (Paige Sports
Entertainment). Corporate naming rights for a collegiate facility
is an interesting area to think about, but not one that matters much
to me.
What matters to me is the way the new stadium package was "sold" to
all concerned. Mizzou did NOT need a new basketball arena, per se,
but but the state got sucked into a bonds deal for it anyway.
That's the thing that really disturbed me about the whole thing.
Mizzou is not a university that can afford to divert good will or
funding to concerns as ancillary as an upgraded basketball facility
given the state of some of its other facilities.
