You've got a point about confidentiality I guess, but even now your
email can be subpoenaed and, if what they want has been deleted, you
have to document that you had a system-wide deletion policy in
effect when the email in question was sent/received.  Actually, 
Google could help with this for folks who pay by rolling a secure 
deletion (say after 1 year) around their servers for corporate 
clients, but NOT allowing destruction before then.

Actually, I'm definitely supposing that reading email is done 
through SSL.  The NSA et al. can already read as many packets of 
traffic (email and anything else) as they like.  Actually, this is 
another reason why having Google do it all could have some benefit 
for some: email sent from one gmail.com address to another probably 
never leaves their servers as it's being delivered.

I'm telling ya, this idea has legs. :-)
