The reason might be that the phone company wants to make more money.
Wouldn't it be more cost effective to split a single line of higher
bandwidth than to buy many lower-bandwidth lines? The phone company might
have a rule against a corporate user putting multiple machines on one
line. Sometimes they charge extra to home users who put multiple machines
on a single DSL line.
