20 minutes? Really? I had my phone at a meeting where a friend had his new G4
laptop. He bragged "... and this thing has "Bluetooth", whatever that is". I
realized my new SE T616 is Bluetooth-enabled as well, and the light bulb went
off. I said, "Let's play! Turn on your Bluetooth!". He clicked around for 30
seconds, found some config GUI and said "OK, I turned it on." I turned on my
phone, and sure as day, his computer shows up, name and all. I said "It wants a
password, but I can only type numbers on my phone". He clicked around some more,
and found where his Mac wanted a password. He said, "I just typed "123456".
Done". I restarted the search, it found his mac, I entered "123456", and Presto!

I said, OK, I'll send you a picture. 30 seconds later, he said, "Hey, there's a
JPG in this folder here!". Super! I sent a contact. He said, "Hey, there's this
"vcf" (standard contact file format, popular in Mozilla) in this folder now!".
That was pretty easy. "Let's see what an appointment does", I said. Another 15
seconds, and he says, "Nothing. .... Wait a minute. An alarm just went off. Hey!
your appointment sent itself to my calendar. Cool!"

I think we spent 10 minutes total getting it to work. I was quite impressed with
Apple's work here. There's Salling Software's "Clicker" application, which I've
seen in operation, and it was impressive - the presenter was using his bluetooth
phone to run the slideshow. Very cool.

My hope is to be able to do the same with Linux (or at least an ArchLUG
KwikiSlideShow).

Yes. It was pretty easy to setup in SuSE. Not finished with the install yet in
Xandros (Debian).

For SuSE, the trick was getting this "hcid" package and looking for "BlueZ"
stuff. Then it was a couple of man pages before I found I needed to put the PIN
in /etc/bluetooth/pin.conf or some such. No GUI config to be found (yet). Once I
did that, and named my host in /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf, (I didn't like the
default "BlueZ (0)" it assigned), it showed up right away in my phone.

I have *NO* idea what to do next as far as sending or receiving files, much less
specific types of files like calendar events and photos and contacts. But I'm
certain I can google for it. Round tuit shortage, etc.

I don't know if my Xandros has the Bluetooth stuff in the kernel enabled, so
it's a bit tougher going on that one.
