Kempo was one of the martial arts that spread to Japan from China. It came out of the Shaulin temple where it started as Chuan Fa, based in a set of 72 basic moves that each had characteristics of animal instinctive moves. Shinjuku is the suburb of Tokyo where most of the entertainment and shopping industries are, I think the "demon city" reference was probably just for drama. I've seen Kempo come up in several TV shows, movies, and even infomercials.
