I changed the topic partly to move the subject away from Christ to the
general topic of torture.. so people need not be defensive about "only
Christ could do that".

You're body can only process so much physical pain before you eventually
can't notice any more. Most people I think would black out. Also
physical pain can be partly mentally blocked. Someone that is heavily
experienced at metatating would be able to do this.. prayer can be a
form of metatation.. so the pain would likely have been much less
intense. It's basiclly taking advantage of the fact that a human brain
can only concentrate on so many threads of thought at a time.. if you
focus them all on say your believes that you are serving God's will then
your brain will have much less time to notice physcial inputs such as pain.

>No offense, but until you've been tortured to death and not tried to shorten the process, I'm going to be skeptical of this. Thinking even of your loved ones is going to be abstract at that point, especially with such heavy blood loss.

I used to torture myself for fun just to see what it was like so to some
degree I think I understand it better than most.. though obviously I've
never been tortured to that extent (to death). Also I've read accounts
of other people that've been tortured. Sadly it's not an uncommon thing.
I also do have a personality that is actually quite subject to emotional
pain.. there is really nothing I fear except that pain.. but maybe other
people would react differently. Overall though, it's much harder to
mentally tune out emotional pain than physical.

Oh, I'd agree you'd want to seek escape but would you actually do it
knowing the cost? I think probably not. At some point you'd recognize
that there was no way for the pain to end for you except death so that'd
be the escape you'd seek but if you knew you had to live til x time to
save your loved ones I think most of us would try. Otherwise there would
have been no point to allowing any of it to happen. I don't think you'd
say "I'm going to live 5 more hours." but for five hours you'd say to
yourself "I'm going to hang on just one more second." There is actually
a big difference there. Obviously, anyone has a breaking point so for
most people I don't think they could handle weeks or months under severe
torture but a day or two I think they could. Not that they ever want to.
