I think a lot of people would be willing to endure more than 12 hours of 
torture.. and death.. for a lot less than that. A lot of people 
throughout history have done so. I think most of us hope we'd do so too. 
I think many, if not most, of us would do so for our friends or family. 
If we happened to save the world in the process then great.

On the other hand it'd be very hard to do the same for an abstract 
cause. It's been done but I'd bet it's much more rare.
