So much for local ownership of the local media:

    http://www.columbiatribune.com/2004/Mar/20040301News001.asp

"Cumulus Media" bought KFRU, KBXR, KOQL and KPLA for *$38 million*.
Evidently no changes in operations are expected. The Tribune
article is really garbled up in a couple of spots, though.

Also of interest: tonight is the City Council hearing where I think
everybody expects the Philips Farm matter to be settled. It looks
like what will now happen is that after the city buys some of the
Philips tract and after the city and state buy out the Crane
farm to the south, there will be a continuous stretch of park from
Nifong Park to Rockbridge. A fairly impressive outcome.

What will also happen is that Sapp (the developer) will end up
building over a million square feet of retail and office space and a
bunch of houses. That's pretty huge. He gets his semi-open C-3
zoned parcel, and that's where I expect the first real development
on the site will happen. He may even have a tenant in mind.

Also implied by all of this, there will be a diamond interchange of
Gans and Route 63 and an extension of the city sewer down through
the Philips Farm to parts south. So I can now close my eyes and
*easily* imagine Columbia, the city, stretching as far south as
where 163 intersects US63, and completely surrounding (an
enlarged) Rockbridge State Park, as well.
