I agree with you. In fact, I think the whole story about Jesus being
nailed to the cross is a little disturbing for children. My dad told me
about it when I was 6 years old and I remember suggesting that it didn't
sound like a true story, but he told me that it *was* a true story. It's
a horrifying thought - being nailed to a cross with real nails hammered
through your hands and feet. Worse still, we are telling children that
this is an example of great heroism. Well, I'd rather have my kids aspire
to something better than torture and execution!

At age 10, I decided my dad was mistaken - that it wasn't a true story -
and I still feel that way.

Related issue -- other heros I was told to admire included John F Kennedy,
Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Ghandi, all of whom were
assassinated. I remember hearing about the assassinations of the first
three during the years from when I was 5½ to 10 years old. Then Nixon
became President - he was forced to resign when I was 16 years old. How
did this affect my view of the world? It's hard to say, because I have
nothing to compare it to, but I certainly wasn't alone in growing up with
this madness!!
