I am told that there were two main religious groups - the Saducees 
(sorry about my spelling here) who I think had the more liberal theology 
(e.g. not believing in a literal afterlife), and the Pharisees who had 
the more conservative theology.  It seems that Jesus was not fond of 
either group, but especially did not like the Pharisees.  He found them 
incredibly hypocritical, and was very vocal in expressing his 
displeasure with them.
