Well, the deal was that the Romans could have cared less for Jesus. He
was annoying to them, but he was not trying to overthrow their rule or
turn people against them. A good example of this was when he was baited
by the Pharisees to say that Jews should not submit to roman rule, and
he said that the Roman coins were from Caesar so their taxes should be
paid to Caesar.
He was more of a threat to the power of the religious leaders of the
time. The Jews did not kill Jesus. Jesus was a Jew. It was the Pharisees
who did not like Jesus upsetting their system. They had it pretty good,
and didn't like what Jesus was saying. It's amazing how many people
never put two and two together to figure that out. The later "Messiahs"
(As Jon put it) were put down by the Romans because they openly opposed
Roman rule.

I think the issue of 'blame' is interesting. There have been problems
between Catholics and Jews in Eastern Europe partly because many
Catholics
there have long believed that "the Jews killed Jesus." Maybe I'm
misunderstanding something, but I thought that (according to Christian
theology) Jesus was *supposed* to die on the cross and it was all part
of
God's master plan. So, if that is correct, why does it matter who
killed
him? That said, wasn't it the Romans and not the Jews?
