You can usually find good systems through dell outlet with a one year
warranty on them. That's about the cheapest "good" machine I could find.
Your mileage will vary depending on when you check out the site. They
also hit you for $50 shipping.

My brother wants to buy a computer with a flat panel monitor for less

$1,200.  He is planning to run Windows, I'm sure, but if you can give

a good enough reason to try another OS, he might take you up on it.  He
wants to use the new computer for digital music recording.  What should

be looking for?  I don't know much about sound cards.  Are their stock
machines that would be very good for this purpose, or will he have to
put
something together?  He'll also want DVD/CD-RW or DVD-RW, but I think
those prices are low enough now that it won't matter much.  How much HD
volume is needed for quality multi-track recording?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, especially if it is coming from
someone who has actually done some multitrack recording on his PC.
