There's not UM-Kirksville. Kirksville was NMSU. And it's University of Missouri-Columbia. They are the original campus, and the original land grant university in the state. They were originaly University of Missouri, untill the 60's when the governing body of University of Missouri-System was formed. At least, that is what I am told. I am not old enough to personaly remember it. So, all in all, it's a little different than your example from Louisiana. It's more closer in structure to the University of California and California State systems. The Missouri State Universities are governed by the state and the coordinating board for higher education, I believe. They don't seam to be as tightly coupled as the University of Missouri system, who has a distinct central governing body. SMSU is wrangling for the top spot of the Missouri State group, similar to how UMC is seen as the main campus for the University of Missouri system. But UMC isn't really the governing body over the others any more (At least not at this particular moment) They are just the largest, and oldest campus in the system. And since they are the original, they feel like they should have the better programs and the better rep. Problem is, you don't get that from just being the oldest and the biggest. When they don't concentrate on tooting their own horn and work at something, they usualy come out on top. When all they do is sit there and toot their own horn, the other campuses come out better in those areas. Problem is, sometimes it just easier to throw your weight around and make every one feel and perform as miserable as you. :-) Shannon ________________________________ From: EMAIL:PROTECTED on behalf of EMAIL:PROTECTED Sent: Thu 2/5/2004 7:03 PM To: EMAIL:PROTECTED Subject: [MLUG - DISCUSSION] Re: State Farm Stays Bear with me, this is a multi-post context... > As long as Truman doesn't become Missouri State University Kirksville... > MSUK. > ... > They want to be *the* Missouri State, which was part of the issue. Ah, this kindles fond memories of attending the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, La. (the first time around) As you know a certain "Louisiana State University" in Baton Rouge has this silly notion that each state is capable of only *one* great educational institution. The thought that there might be more than one never crosses their tiny handful of synapses. And, like Columbia, LSU is right next door to the legislature that hands out the dollars. So, the former "University of Southwestern Louisiana" engaged in a campaign to "Kiss my "S" goodbye!" :=) And was promptly sued by LSU with a "You can't do that! People will be confused about which one is *THE* premier university in this state, and it certainly isn't some podunk regional wannabe like USL!" And lots of political dirty laundry was aired, to our voting delight over the next several years... USL's next suggestion was a "University of Louisiana at ..." similar to Missouri here and now (UMSL, UM-Rolla, and UM-Kirksville come to mind). However, in Lafayette, we weren't laughing at the thought of "U La La". And decided to press the issue, and make LSU change *it's* name to "Univ of La, Baton Rouge". Well, the hypocrisy was too much to bear, and some unflattering details about the origins and actual "ownership" of the "Univ of La" name (a deal with Tulane in exchange for legislators getting free "secret" scholarships to give to family and cronies). >> If they do can I buy New Orleans up cheap? That's still one of my >> favorite places. Certainly more interesting than Las Vegas. > > I like New Orleans, too. I would probably get a fatty liver and > weigh 400 pounds, but there you go. I can only agree here. Born and raised in N'awlins. And that Emeril dude is from New Joisey. Puh-leaze. Fer True. He couldn't tell you the difference between red and white boudain or green and brown gumbo if his life depended on it. He only "sucks da heads" because somebody told him that he would suck up some brains and get smart all of a sudden.... > Still tempted to move to that geneal area (Ruston) Ah, the *true* Peach Capital of the South. Home of Louisiana Tech and the finest girls' collegiate volleyball team on the planet. I think Terry Bradshaw went there too. On second thought, that's not exactly a compliment to La Tech. :-) Oh, and Mardi Gras is coming up. Although Soulard definately ain't no French Qwawtah, Dahlin'. :=) Mike/ --------------------------------------------- http://www.valuenet.net _______________________________________________ discussion mailing list EMAIL:PROTECTED http://mlug.missouri.edu/mailman/listinfo/discussion
