Since this seems to be a pretty much open invitation for sob stories:
Well, I enjoy my job, but I do have a relatively mild story...
When I started, they told me that consultants had advised 3-4 more positions for our department. We have since lost our part-time person and his position, a full time person + position, and we had another take a job elsewhere whose position we've not yet filled. Last month, we had another out on sick leave the whole month, leaving us with 4 people including myself. Due to the family needs of other members of staff, that fell to 2 people for several days, and for a few hours, just me, myself, and I. Needless to say, I've been busy.
Now for my horrible story...
My previous job, I had a meeting with my boss, and several other IT folk, including the Oracle DBA/server admin. Even though I was an intern, I was given the task of planning out and executing the conversion of our website to a Linux platform, replacing the ASP with Perl. The other two interns were assigned to work with me on the conversion process, and various aspects of it were assigned as needed to various full-time IT folk. In the meeting, the DBA/server admin was told to order a new server and to set up a temporary/development server. He was basically given free reign over the setup of the system, and did a good job on the development server. Months later, as the project drew to a close, all the while running things past this gentleman, we got to the point where we could finish in a week, barring updates that needed to be re-converted. We asked, and were approved a week of absolutely NO changes to be made, and the rest of the IT staff that worked on the web was to (and did) help us interns finish and test, at the end of which time we'd go live. This was all relayed in a mass email to the organization. At the end of the week, we completed on time, and with successful tests, so I went to the DBA/SA and asked him if he was ready to copy it to the production server, only to find out there was no production server, and to be told that he had heard nothing about it. I got the blame for "failing to communicate", as did a full time employee who wasn't actually involved in the project. It took another month before our work was satisfactory to the DBA/SA for him to put it into production on a pre-existing server.
Sorry, but no job opportunities I think you'd be interested. I mostly see entry level work that I pass on to friends who are just now graduating, or just above entry level that friends vacate. The position we're trying to fill here is tech support (I posted the link here a while back), and you'd be stuck working with me. ;-)
