You need to move to Europe :) Here it's illegal for an employer to make
you work more than 48 hours a week. Normal vacation time is between
20-30 days a year - I get 27 days, plus up to 12 days public/bank
holdays a year - I get all 12. So that's 39 days off a year for me, not
including any time of in lieu that I get when I work more than my
standard 7 hour day. Enough to take a week off each month for eight
months of the year.

Where I work, we have to take the Christmas break off - 25th December
right through to 5th January this year because the office is closed.
With plenty of vacation time, most folk would take that off anyway so I
haven't seen any complaints.

This one really gets me. Over here I've never seen the concept of having
to build up "sick days" before you're allowed to be ill. Some employers
won't pay you for your first five days off - though you could take that
from your vacation time. And that really only applies to hourly paid
workers.

Most decent employers will pay their staff at full salary for six months
if they're off sick. After that they'd then get another six months at
half pay before finally being told to go and apply for state benefits.
So if you break your leg or get diagnosed with something nasty, you're
not under immediate pressure to get back to work.

Russell.
