And back then not very many of them had bumpers like what is mandatory
on American cars (boy is that poorly worded). But this was the mid to
late 80s and I don't know how it's changed. And going down to the local
BMW dealer wouldn't help since those intended for export are made to
American safety standards.
IIRC there was a whole sub-economy in grey market cars that were old
enough that they didn't have to meet safety standards.
