I remember reading somewhere that interstate highways were designed to
have traffic flowing on them at 80mph, and this was in the 1960s. I
droe far faster than any posted speed limit in this country while I was
in France and Germany. The roads were moderately better, but not really
any better than a new, modern interstate. What was a lot better was
driver training. No left lane hogs, nobody that weaves in and out of
traffic, just free flowing traffic and drivers that follow the rules,
espically in Germany. Honestly, I felt safer driving in traffic at
100MPH in Germany that I've ever felt driving in traffic here.
The link has escaped me now, but German Autobahns have a much lower
fatality rate than American interstates.
