No, obviously that's not new. What amazed me was the new trend in
doing sounds from *automatic* weaponry. We used to go "bang!
pow!" etc., and it was clear that fully automatic weaponry was not
in our vocal arsenal. Actually, my brother and I used to do mortar
fire an awful lot, as well.
And, heck; back in those days you could get a serious cap gun,
although my dad, the former marine corps captain, would actually not
let us point guns at each other. Only imaginary bad guys or real or
imaginary targets.

I did see some of the latter in San Diego. Actually, what depressed
me most was seeing one kid progress from playing driveby to
(apparently) becoming a junior look-out for a real gang that hung
out one neighborhood over from ours. Obviously, that does not always
happen, but it did make me wonder a bit about how and when things
become inappropriate.
