I hope you know her better than any of us do, so what does she like or need?

Gifts can be problematic when they're cookiecutter gifts like your "mom" gifts or jewelry. Some people like that, others feel it shows that you put money instead of thought into it. Personally, when I have absolutely no idea what someone wants I go with electronics I know they don't have, such as a DVD player, digital camera, or some such. They know that as a geek, I saw their geekly needs and thought accordingly. If you're really worried about the thought angle, make the card yourself without the aid of a computer and wrap it yourself. Even if it looks bad, it shows you put real effort into it.

Above all, never buy pre-wrapped items off the shelf at wal-mart. Those are great if the gift is really a formality anyway, but they demonstrate a complete and utter lack of thought when "its the thought that counts".
