When I needed to do this, I found Slackware had a ~100 MB distro that 
worked.  You will be playing your mp3s and audio CDs with mpg321 and dcd 
though, no X on it.

I also found a X-terminal distribution that fit on two floppies, and 
used about 2MB ram.  I forget the name.  let me google... this isn't it,
