That would depend on the type of ADSL equipment they're using. Modern
DSL
should reach 5 1/2 km (3.5 miles). If they're running rate adaptive adsl
they may be able to extend that reach to about 6km (3.73 miles).
Of course your distance from the exchange may have only a passing
resemblance to your distance from the exchange in terms of miles of
copper
:)
I've seen ADSL here in the UK at those sort of distances with line noise
at
or near the accepted max of 55db that sits comfortably at 512 kbits down
/
256 kbits upstream.
