That means that they already installed a DSLAM in the Telco CO. A few
miles is pushing it. Typically it's limited to a distance of one to two
miles of cable length. And that has to be good cable. CentryTel isn't
going to send any one out, because they don't want to spend the money
unless they have a guaranteed sale. They won't publish maps, because
lawyers might take it as a guarantee of availability. They will not put
their butt's on the line unless there is a payoff, and ADSL is far from
a solid science. How many times have you heard of someone who had
terrible problems with their DSL while their next door neighbor never
had an issue. Lot's of times. If there were published maps, guess what,
the phone company would have been liable because they published a
service they could not make work. This way, they can cut their losses
and return your money. If they had a map, you could harass them until it
worked. And even then it may not.

My parents live right outside the city limits (ie. half a mile away) and
there is a telephone POP (not sure if this is the correct term, but
close
enough) a few miles away. I called Centurytel and DSL is available for
their exchange and also for their telephone number, but Centurytel
won't guarantee the DSL will work until an order is placed with
them and a line check is done.....It seems they won't do a line check
until you have a "hard order" with them.
