I too expect to live forever. So far so good! :-)
Seriously though, the gas mileage I get on my car does not bother me. I am quite satisfied with 24mpg city mileage in my V-8, several thousand lb. Caprice. The 100mpg was an exaggeration, currently the non-hybrids rarely get above 30mpg city mileage, and that is considered extremely good. The hybrids don't come in heavier cars, simply because they are still in development, and its much easier to provide a power source for a light car than a heavy car.
