Now this sounds like a project for MLUG. Lets get an old streetcar, swap out its track wheels and axles with something a bit more sturdy and road-worthy, and stick a huge solar pannel array on the top, then use electrical motors to control the steering (which we'd have to add in anyway, since the tracks no longer guide), an electric lever to adjust the acceleration, and connect these to an LED array controller. The different parts of the array could be assigned to different driving options. Set this up with an 802.11b card and control it from your laptop. The ultimate remote control racer :-)
